Windows users 'paying $20 patent tax'
"Every time businesses and consumers shell out for a copy of Windows, they could be paying $20 to keep Microsoft's patent lawyers happy. According to the Software Freedom Law Centre (SFLC), consumers pay a $20 'patent tax' on all Redmond operating systems, whether pre-installed or off the shelf."

Google pulls nefarious sponsored links
"Google has removed paid links that advertised seemingly legitimate websites but actually tried to install nefarious programs on PCs. The links were displayed as "sponsored links" after visitors entered specific queries into Google's search service. Clicking the links would ultimately go to a legitimate site but by way of another site that attempted a "drive-by installation" of password-stealing software."

Worst week for viruses in a year?
"Postini said two variations of the Storm Worm virus, which originally spread across the internet in January, have quickly driven global virus levels 60 times higher than their daily average. Email users should be on alert for messages with "love"-related subject lines and an executable attachment that would contain a Trojan virus, as well as messages with "Worm Alert!" subject lines that contained a dot-zip file full of malicious code."

Chat worm warning for Skype users
"A new instant-messaging pest that spreads using the chat feature in Skype has surfaced, according to a warning by security company F-Secure. The worm, dubbed Pykse.A, is similar to threats that affect IM applications. A targeted Skype user will receive a chat message with text and a web link that looks like it goes to a Jpeg file on a website, F-Secure said on its website."

Hackers shy away from DDoS attacks
"distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack uses a network of compromised computers, known as a botnet, to send a large number of packets to a site, causing its server to fall over. Some attackers try to extort money from the site by threatening to launch another attack. However, DDoS attacks are becoming less frequent because of increasing risks to attackers, according to Symantec."

Apple fixes QuickTime vulnerability
"The media player vulnerability lies in QuickTime for Java, Apple said in a security alert. The hole could be exploited through a rigged website and let an attacker commandeer computers running both Mac OS X and Windows, the Mac maker said."

Adult Spam Down, Image Spam Climbs
"New study finds spammers now focus on health-related products and general product pitches. Improvements in blocking and filtering methods have driven spammers to use new techniques to get into inboxes. Some 38 percent of the spam sent in February used images in messages, which makes it more difficult for security software. Messages appear to be more unique, allowing them to bypass a filter."
